Bord Na nOg under 16 League Semi Final ( 2005).

Blackrock 1 --- 9 Glen Rovers 2 --- 9.

There was little between the sides in this entertaining match played at Church Road on Saturday 11th February. It was tight with each ball well contested. A goal early in each half from Glen Rovers secured a hard fought victory. The first from Colm Horgan following a defensive lapse enabled the Glen to lead by a point at half time 1 --- 3 to 5 points. Graham Howard, Brian Ahern, Brian O'Sullivan, Roy Power and Declan Kelleher scored the points for the Rockies.

When Glen full forward Richard Whitty banged in an early goal followed by a Kevin Barry point, they were in a comfortable position from then until the end. Roy Power added two points for the Rockies however Paul Hegarty responded with two for the northsiders. An opportunist goal from Declan Kelleher came too late for the Rockies who to their credit fought until the end. Leonard Guckian and Colm Horgan excelled throughout for Glen Rovers while Graham Howard, Declan Kelleher, Brian O'Sullivan and Brian Ahern worked hard for the Rockies.

Under 16B League Semi-Final (2005)

Blackrock 2 --- 6 Na Piarsaigh 3 --- 4.

Kilbarry Saturday February 4th

This turned out to be an interesting contest with the Rockies fighting back in the final ten minutes from two goals down to level the contest.

However a last minute free denied them the draw which they deserved. Colm Barry notched 1 --- 4 after giving a fine display aided by good performances from Donal Murray, Aonghus O'Drisceoil, Eoghan Buckley and Jamie O'Keeffe.

The Blackrock mentors wish to thank all the young lads for their efforts on the day and throughout 2005.

October 2005

Under 16A County Final Replay.

Played at Ballinlough Saturday 15th October.

Blackrock 1 --- 9 Sarsfields 1 --- 12.

Sarsfields led from start to finish in this close encounter following the draw two weeks ago. Despite Blackrock starting well and dominating in loose play they had only a Steve Guerin point to show for it after 15 minutes. When Sars turn came to get on top they put away seven good points to add to their initial point from a free after 10 minutes. One from Robert O'Driscoll from the side line caught the eye. Declan Kelleher for the Rockies also picked off a particularly skilled point. The Sars lead by 8 points to 4 at half time having played with a freshening wind. The two remaining Rockies points came from frees by Declan Kelleher and Roy Power.

Again despite a period of dominance early in the second half, the Rockies could not get the vital scores, while Sarsfields were able to keep in touch with less effort. Points from Roy Power and Donal Murray were matched with two from Sarsfields. A key moment came after 18 minutes when a high dropping ball was finished to the Blackrock net to leave Sars seven points to the good.

Points from Declan Kelleher and a goal from a close in free by Brian Ahern after Steve Guerin was upended pointed to a Rocky fightback. Two further attempts for goals by Brian Ahern, one from a penalty, were saved and despite points from Patrick Parfrey and Roy Power the gap could not be closed as dogged defence by Sarsfields and an ability to pick off points from out the field ensured there was no way back for this Blackrock side.

Under 16A Cork County Championship Final.

Played at Passage on Saturday 1st October.

Blackrock 3 --- 2 Sarsfields 0 --- 11.

This was a tightly fought match which nether side deserved to lose in the end. The Rockies will probably be happier with the final result having failed to score from the 20th minute of the first half until Steve Guerins goal in the second minute of injury time in the second half. Initially it looked like the Rockies would coast as they led 1 --- 2 to 0 --- 1 after 8 minutes. Guerin had banged in a quick goal followed by points from Declan Kelleher and Roy Power. When Patrick Parfrey fired in another goal for the Rockies, it looked curtains for the Glanmire side. Blackrock then inexplicably failed to score again until the final minutes while Sarsfields added eight further points. Richard Dineen, David Carroll and Christy Bonus were excellent for the Rockies while Steve Guerins goals were invaluable.

The Blackrock Hurling club wishes to record our appreciation to Mick Noonan of Sars who provided invaluable assistance with an injured Blackrock player in the second half.

Under 16A Championship

Blackrock had a comprehensive victory over a good Blarney team in the semi-final of the Under 16A Championship played at Passage on Saturday 24th September. Kieran O’Mahony, Steven Guerin, Darren Loftus and Ciaran Tobin were outstanding for the Rockies. This team has now qualified for the under 16A Final which will be played on Saturday next 1^st October against Sarsfields, time and venue to be determined.

Christy Bonus, Graham Howard and Declan Kelleher gave fine displays of skill as the Rockies overcame a spirited Sliabh Rua in Church Road on Saturday evening. Sept 17th

August 2005

Under 16 Championship.

Blackrock 2 --- 8 Glen Rovers 1 --- 12.

A point late in injury time from Glen Rovers settled this fine hurling contest played at Bishopstown recently. It had been very close also in the first half, with a goal from Glen Rovers Kevin Barry being answered by one from Blackrock's Patrick Parfrey. Gordon Ahern had also made a wonderful double save in this period for the Rockies.

In the second more direct play from the north siders had opened up a 5 point gap by the 20th minute however a goal and a point from Patrick Parfrey brought the Rockies back into it and when Roy Power levelled well into injury time a draw looked on the cards. The late point ensured victory for Glen Rovers.

July 2005

Under 16B League.

Blackrock 1 --- 9 Nemo Rangers 0 --- 7.

Played on Monday 4^th July at Church Road this was a very close game with scores at a premium, despite some excellent opportunities on both sides to convert. Blackrock started well and put some good scores on the board early on. A goal just before halftime enabled the Rockies to go in at the interval in the lead by 1 --- 7 to 0 --- 3.

Nemo took the game to Blackrock in the second half and only for some wayward shooting would have troubled the Rockies more seriously. Some outstanding defensive work by Greg Maher and Ciaran O’Shaughnessy kept the Nemo forwards at bay. Donal Murray put in a great effort from start to finish, while Eoghan Buckley was everywhere and contributed important scores when needed. This win is the third win in a row for this Blackrock outfit, in spite of many absentees due to the holiday season.

June 2005

U16A league, Blackrock had a comfortable win over Carrigaline on Saturday 25th june after an initial shaky start when they conceded some easy scores. A very competent second half display ensured the points for the Rockies. Patrick Parfrey turned in a fine display.

U16B team also accounted for Na Piarsaigh at Na Piarsaigh on Friday June 24th.

Under 15 League semi-final

Blackrock 2 --- 5 Na Piarsaigh 3 --- 7 (after extra time)

Blackrock should really have put this match away in ordinary time, the failure to do so cost the team dearly once it went to extra time as Na Piarsaigh appeared to have more in the tank. Declan Kelleher picked off some fine scores for the Rockies. Others to shine included Adrian Glenna at full-back and Kieran O’Mahony in the half back line.

Under 15 Championship.

Glen Rovers edged out the Rockies by a single point in this hard fought game played at Redmonds on Saturday evening October 9th

This was a great game, the Rockies fought back from being 1 --- 10 to 0 --- 2 points down at the interval to just lose out on the scoreline 1 --- 14 to 2 --- 10. Brian Ahern contributed 2 --- 3 of the Rockies scores, while Roy Power and Brian O’Sullivan worked hard all through.

Blackrock despite being short several regulars were well ahead at half time through the efforts of David Carroll, Brian O'Sullivan and some fine scores from David Myler. However the northside lads fought back in the second half and eventually ran out winners.

Under 14 league semi-final.

St.Finbarrs 1 --- 8 Blackrock 0 --- 8.

This match played at the Barr’s last Sunday was a fine hard fought game of hurling. Short a number of regulars, Blackrock were in the game until they conceded a goal near the end. Graham Howard was absolutely outstanding and was definitely the Rockies man-of the match. In defence, Ian Giltenan, Kieran O’ Mahony, and Ken Howick gave fine performances, while Ciaran Tobin and Brian O’ Sullivan worked very hard all through the game. This panel of hurlers gave some fine performances all year and having finished 2003 as county champions can feel very pleased with their efforts. Well done to all the mentors.

September 2003

Under 14 County Hurling Final.

Pairc Ui Rinn, Sunday, September 28th 2003.

Blackrock 4 --- 7 Newtownshandrum 1 --- 12.

This was a typical Rockies/Newtown clash with thrills, close scoring, a rip-roaring finish and some very good hurling from two of the great hurling adversaries in County Cork. Blackrock did much of the work in the first half yet were only one point to the good at half-time 1 --- 5 to 0 --- 7. Newtown were all over the Rockies for the first 20 minutes of the second half, yet with victory within their grasp, the Rockies snatched it from them.

Early points from Roy Power (free), Declan Kelleher and a beauty from Stephen Guerin were countered by Newtown's Ryan Clifford and Michael Bowles. An opportunist goal after 15 minutes from Ger O' Reagan of the Rockies following a wonderful reflex save by Padraig Noonan in the Newtown goal gave Blackrock some daylight. Robert Murphy and Declan Kelleher added further points before half-time while Ryan Clifford opened up with a series of three points from play and frees.

Clifford operating at full forward added two further points early in the second half to put Newtownshandrum ahead for the second time by a point. Richard Forrestal with a goal and a point along with a point from Bowles put the North Cork side two goals ahead and in the driving seat with just 10 minutes left.

When Roy Power pointed from a free after 22 minutes it was the Rockies first score of the second half. Patrick Parfrey who had come on early in the second half settled into centre half forward with Guerin moving to the full-forward position, (although continuing to roam widely). The point from Power seemed to settle the team and heralded an amazing fight-back. Brian Ahern belted a 21 meter free to the net and Stephen Guerin after a solo run put the Rockies one point ahead with a fine goal, from the puck-out.

Ryan Fallon converted a good point to bring the sides level with 3 minutes of normal time left. Displaying an extraordinary determination, Parfrey and Guerin ran at a tired Newtown defence, only for young Noonan to make a great save. From the break, Ger O' Reagan hammered the ball to the net. It was all over when Power converted a very difficult free from the sideline 40 yards out.

This success represents an amazing turnaround by this Blackrock team. It signified a triumph for good solid work on the training ground by a panel of very committed players. This combined with a great "can-do" spirit within the team itself epitomised by Steve Guerin, who was carrying an injury. His sheer determination literally pulled this game from the Newtown lads in the final moments. This entire panel have worked hard and kept working even when things were not going right… always the sign of a good team! From Gordon Ahern in goal to Declan Kelleher at number 15 this was a great team performance.

The Newtownshandrum club can be rightly proud of their team, who gave a great display and could so easily have won this game. The team is very strong up the middle through Herlihy, Fallon, Bowles and Clifford. Young Padraig Noonan in goal typified the courage and bravery of this fine bunch of hurlers and their day will surely come.

Referee: Michael Myers, Whitechurch. As the two teams played hurling at all times, it was not a difficult match to officiate.

Under 14 County Semi-Final.

Blackrock 3 --- 12 Sarsfields 3 --- 8.

Saturday 20th September 2003. Venue. Carrigaline.

That this game went to extra time was the result of Blackrock failing to kill off a battling Sarsfields team when they had many opportunities to do so. Leading by 8 points at half -time, the Rockies dominated the early exchanges in the second half yet squandered chance after chance. That the Rockies actually survived the extra time and won this game is a tribute to their spirit and resilience in the face of pressure. Opportunities to score must be taken however.

The match started with outstanding captain Stephen Guerin firing over two points. Declan Kelleher tore holes in the Sars defence and had a goal and a point up on the board by the 20th minute. Minutes later he gave a beautiful handpass to Brian O'Sullivan whose shot would have finished up in Crosshaven only for the net. Roy Power from a free, Ger O'Regan and Robert Murphy added further points. Sars had converted three frees to leave the halftime score at 2 ---5 to 0 ---3.

After the resumption, Blackrock wasted chance after chance, which allowed Sarsfields to battle their way back with, points from frees and play. With the clock almost up, a failure by the Rocky defence to clear their lines left Sars in for the equalising goal to leave matters at the end of normal time at 2 ---7 each.

The Rockies to their credit had more in reserve and despite wayward shooting continued to the add the points, Roy Power (f) Steve Guerin and Brian Ahern added to the Rocky scoreline in the first period of extra time to a single point from Sars number 5 who had moved up from the halfback line.

Rocked by an early goal on the resumption, which put Sars a point ahead, Blackrock clawed their way back with the aid of two frees from Roy Power. One of these was from a 21 when what seemed like legitimate claims for a penalty were dismissed, however the other just 10 meters from the sideline required ice-cool concentration. This put the Rockies one point up.

Following a foul on Declan Kelleher, Stephen Guerin broke through and sent a rasper to the net bringing to an end 90 minutes of good hard hurling, during which the end result was in doubt to the final whistle. Ian Giltenan and David Carroll in defence played well, while Brian Ahern often turned defence into attack. This team is improving all the time, has a fantastic spirit, some very skilful players and will not concede victory to any team easily. Well done to all involved.

City Championship Final 2003.

Blackrock 3 --- 10 Glen Rovers 1 --- 6

This result represented a decisive reversal of the recent City Feile Final outcome when the Glen clinched the game by 6 points. Played in fine conditions at Bishopstown on Wednesday evening10th September it was a stirring contest with some excellent hurling and a massive and passionate commitment shown by both well prepared sides.

Scoring was quite low in the first half with the Rockies leading by 1 --- 3 to four points after 20 minutes, the Rockies goal coming from Ger O' Reagan. However in a purple patch just before half-time, Glen Rovers added a further goal and two points to leave the score at the interval Glen Rovers 1 --- 6, the Rockies 1 --- 3.

The Rockies were able to up a gear in the second half and the Glen lads could not stay with them. The Blackrock backs hunted in packs, defended in numbers and sealed off all avenues to goal, while the forwards, especially Steve Guerin and Declan Kelleher fired over some great scores. Roy Power added two points from frees, while Ger O' Reagan added a point.

Following an excellent save by the very dependable Gordon Ahern in goal, the ball was cleared down as far as Declan Kelleher who blasted it to the net in the 19th minute. When Brian Ahern converted a penalty a minute later there was no way back for the Glen. Young Kelleher added a final point to bring his total to one goal and three points.

Strangely, the Glen failed to score in the second half and despite the efforts of Leonard Guckian and Kieran Mc Henry they were unable to make any impression on the Blackrock display. This was a fine display by the Rockies all over the field, with Christy Bonus and Ian Giltenan being particularly prominent, while Ronan Buckley made some fine clearances. Brian Ahern was very solid at centre back aided by Kieran O' Mahony and David Carroll. Graham Howard put in a brave display and ran himself into the ground, while Roy Power contributed some fine first time ball to the forwards. Shane Norberg tried hard in the first half while his replacement Robert Murphy added some fine touches in the second half and put over a fine point.

Brian O' Sullivan's powerful striking kept the ball moving, while the strong running Steve Guerin attacked the Glen defence at every opportunity and scored three points in all from play. Ger O' Reagan gave a wholehearted and disciplined display in the corner. Brian Lynch worked very hard at full-forward as did Ciaran Tobin when he came in near the end. Man of the match was Declan Kelleher, who scored some sublime points and whose goal in the second half finished off the game.

Jim Ryng Chairman of Bord Na nOg presented the Paddy Quilligan trophy to Stephen Guerin, captain of Blackrock.

Referee Donal Harris did a very good job in what was a fine game of hurling.

June 2003

Feile Hurling Final 2003.

This final was eventually played on Thursday evening 30^th May at Ballinlough.

The Rockies started well and had a point after 7 minutes from centre forward Steve Guerin, after some sustained pressure. The Glen then entered a period of dominance and scored a point, followed by a goal after 17 minutes. Between the 20^th and 24^th minutes Blackrock claimed 2 goals and a point, the goal a tap in from Declan Kelleher after a long Blackrock free from Brian Aherne, followed by a David Meyler goal after Declan Kelleher soloed into the Glen square.

The interval score was Blackrock 2 --- 2 to Glen Rovers 1 ----2.

Two quick Blackrock attacks yielded no score early in the second half resulted in Steve Guerin sustaining a serious hand injury and effectively neutralised the Blackrock attack. From then on, the cumulative effect of three hard competitive games in six days kicked in and Blackrock were left chasing the game. Two quick goals and a series of points from frees and play for the Glen left the final score at Glen Rovers 3 --- 8, Blackrock 2 --- 5.

Blackrock battled to the end, with Patrick Parfrey, Christy Bonus and Richard Dineen, trying their best, however nothing could stem the Glen attacks. It was a brave effort by Blackrock, and the club now wish Glen Rovers the best of luck in the All- Ireland Feile competition.

However the position whereby youngsters are requested to play three hard competitive hurling matches within 6 days in the middle of their school exams is hardly conducive to the promotion of the game or to the welfare of our young hurlers. This situation requires to be seriously examined by all involved in hurling.

City League final result. Blackrock 1-5 Glen Rovers 0-11

In this exciting match played at the Glen Field last Sunday morning, Blackrock led by 1-4 to 4 points at half time. Jack Linehan, who had a fine game scored the goal. However the Glen came back strongly in the second half and despite the best efforts of Gordon Ahern in goal and Graham Howard, the Rockies could not convert possession to scores and eventually lost by three points. This under 13 panel has had a fine year and has already won the Premier hurling championship.

Under 13 League Semi-Final

Saturday 26th October at Church road 4.15 pm Blackrock V Sarsfields

Under 13 Premier Hurling Championship Final Success.

The Blackrock under 13 hurlers had a last minute, one point victory over Glen Rovers in the final of the under 13 Premier Hurling Championship Final played at sunny Ballincollig last Saturday. In a very exciting contest, Blackrock lead all through the game, however the tenacious Glen hurlers levelled the match with 8 minutes remaining. It could have gone either way, until Declan Kelleher pointed from a last minute free to secure victory for the Rockies. Christy Bonus, Brian Ahern and Stephen Guerin had fine games in the Blackrock defence. Graham Howard and Brian O' Sullivan worked very hard at centre field, while Declan Kelleher played a massive part up front in this victory. Captain Brian Ahern accepted the beautiful Fr. Nessan Cup on behalf of the team.

Under 13 City Hurling Championship.

Blackrock 2 --- 4 Carrigaline 1---6

In a very closely fought game at Carrigaline on Friday evening last, Blackrock just pipped Carrigaline to advance in the Under 13 Championship. Carrigaline went in at half time with a one-point lead thanks to a goal just before the break on the scoreline of Carrigaline 1 ---2 to 4 points for the Rockies. On the resumption, Blackrock got a quick goal from Donal Murray, who also created the second, which was put away beautifully by Declan Kelleher. Carrigaline fought from then until the final whistle but could not salvage the game. Brian Aherne and Stephen Guerin played well for the Rockies

Under 13 Panel 2002.

Composition.

36 boys have registered to participate in competition for 2002, at under 13. Whilst the numbers are down a little on last year, the Club is delighted to see such a large number of boys back, for the current season. These are the lads who won the under 12 County Hurling championship in 2001. Well done lads !! (Click here for panel)

Background.

Most of these boys have hurled together from the age of 5/6 and have shown excellent team spirit. This was displayed in particular last year when they had to dig very deep, to draw with Newtownshandrum, in last years County semi-final ,in Banteer. A huge range of skills, courage, determination and in particular team spirit ,was displayed in this very exciting match. The replay was equally exciting with Blackrock eventually winning the match. Hopefully we will see more of these County medals.

Competitions 2002.

Unfortunately, there is no County competition at under 13 level, but there will be the usual leagues, and also the City Championship. A team is entered in the South East under 14 League . The first match is away to passage on Friday 24 May 2002. (Click here for South East League fixtures)

Due to the reduction in numbers only one team is being entered in the City League which starts against Douglas on Monday the 13 May. It is however hoped to enter two teams in the city championship, provided sufficient numbers are available.

Training.

Training is usually on a Friday night at 6.00 pm. This will now change due to commencement of leagues.

Under-12 (Born 1989) Annual Report 2001

The Under-12's had a very successful year during 2001. The numbers being catered for varied between approximately 45-50. Because of the numbers, two teams were entered in most competitions.

At the commencement of the season, a number of objectives were set including;

1. Ensure that all players remain involved and participate for the full season

2. Run two teams to ensure that everyone gets a game

3. Enter an A and B team in the Championship

The ultimate objective for the season was to win the County Championship. Trips during the year included a visit to the Mallow Tournament in which two teams participated. Both teams participated in the William Ahern Perpetual Trophy, and both teams reached the final.

Two teams were entered for the League. The teams were divided evenly to ensure that all players had an equal opportunity to participate and win the competition. Both teams reached the semi-final of the league and met in the semi-final. unfortunately, one team had to lose. the finalists were narrowly defeated by Douglas in the league final by 1 point.

Two teams were entered in the Championship during the year, an A and a B team. The B team were beaten in the first round by Nemo Rangers which was very disappointing. The A team beat Douglas in the City Final. They subsequently played various other matches and met Newtownshandrum in the County Semi-final. The first match which was a cracking affair was a draw.

The relay was won by 2 points. Both teams gave an excellent display on each occasion which was a credit to all involved. The County Final against Sliabh Rua was very one-sided and Blackrock won conclusively. The score was 7-14 to 1-3. (Click here for photo from the final)

Overall, the number of players and the level of commitment by the players was excellent. It is hoped that all players will continue to be involved, and every effort is being made to ensure that the numbers are maintained for future years.
